They help us experience every aspect of life and form mature judgments.” “The arts aren’t just a diversion or type of entertainment, but rather than something integral to life. “We need the arts to reach our potential as citizens,” he says, stressing their relevance. It’s not just about the orchestra playing a nice song. “Listeners of all backgrounds and all ages.” He explains that anyone could come to a concert and listen to one of Beethoven’s symphonies and enjoy it, but the listener’s perspective changes when they learn Beethoven was a person grappling with the idea of human freedom-an idea that is still relevant today. “The orchestra and you and I are not only struggling to put on a good show but also to make the program relevant to today’s listeners,” he says. “It’s been standard practice for many years to write notes for people who have specialized knowledge about music,” he says, “but what we need to do is relate music broadly to what our lives are like today.” He approaches each article with “a journalist’s and generalist’s sensibility.” This eventually led him to his career in writing program notes for several notable organizations like the Santa Fe Opera, the Pacific Symphony, as well as ourselves.Ĭlive’s philosophy is to put journalism first. At age 30, he found his work environment felt too corporate for him, and he decided to make a change-he went back to grad school to be a music journalist. He started his career by working in newsrooms and eventually ended up in advertising. He’s a journalist by trade, so he is skilled at telling compelling stories. He knows how to explain music to people who are not musicians. He doesn’t consider himself a musician, but says this is actually an advantage in writing about classical music. He recalled that ever since he was a child, he has been listening to and loving classical music. “I hate to use the f-word, but I’m a fanatic,” he says. One of the things that makes Clive’s voice unique is his background. “It’s an ambitious goal that we have for your audience!” His goal is to appeal to everyone in the audience, from the classical music experts to the newest listeners. “I don’t want to leave anybody behind,” he says. Michael Clive, one of our program annotators, has a gift for writing about classical music and making it relatable to a broad audience. Of course, not all program notes are created equal. One of the best ways to enjoy a classical music performance is to read the program notes beforehand. Sure, you might find yourself enjoying the music, but without a relevant guidepost, it’s hard to engage in the performance. With no reference points or clues of what to listen for, you might find yourself tumbling down a figurative black hole of confusion. Sometimes someone can feel just as disoriented when they attend a symphony or an opera. Not noticing any of the warnings on display, the man walked up to the eight-foot black circle without realizing it was a hole, not just black paint-and fell in, as in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. I recently came across an article about a visitor to a Portuguese art exhibit featuring Anish Kapoor’s installation Descent into Limbo. Credit transactionsĬredit transactions occur when a creditor or lender supplies a company with goods, services, money, or securities in exchange for a deferred payment. Another example of a non-cash transaction is a company converting its bonds to another type of asset of equal value. An example of a non-cash transaction is a company that takes over a loan from another company in exchange for an asset, such as a share. Businesses still record these transactions in their financial statements as they impact the company's income or expenditure. Non-cash transactionsĪ non-cash transaction is any type of financial transaction that doesn't involve the exchange of cash or credit. Another example is a customer purchasing a cup of coffee from a cafe and paying with their debit card. An example of this is a restaurant purchasing ingredients from their supplier and paying them in cash. A cash transaction is a type of external transaction. It doesn't have to be physical money, it can include debit transactions or cheques as well. They refer to any transaction that involves the exchange of cash. Cash transactionsĬash transactions are one of the most common types of transactions that businesses make. An employee receiving their salary or a department giving office supplies to another department are examples of internal transactions. Internal transactions aren't sales like external transactions are, but they affect the company's finances. It is typically an exchange of finances between departments or the company and its employees. Related: Differences Between Public Accounting and Private Accounting Internal transactionsĪn internal transaction is any financial activity that occurs within an organization rather than with a third party. For example, a customer purchasing a hammer from a hardware store or a business purchasing equipment from a supplier are external transactions. This transaction can be between two people, two organizations, or a person and an organization. One party is buying a product or service while the other party is selling it. Here are the most common types of account transactions: External transactionsĪn external transaction, also known as a business transaction, is a trade of goods and services for money. Essentially, any exchange of money is an accounting transaction. Accounting: Understanding the Differences What are accounting transactions?Īccounting transactions are any business activities that affect the company's financial statements and status. In this article, we define accounting transactions, explain the different types, and share common examples to help you identify these transactions more easily. If you work in finance, understanding these transactions is important because they affect a company's financial status and statements. Every company uses various transactions, and it may be your job to keep track of them. From purchasing supplies and selling products and services to borrowing money from a creditor, account transactions occur in business every day. To most people, a pound of fat sounds trivial. (We will cover macros for body recomposition in more detail later.)įor now, let's keep this simple: one pound of fat tissue contains about 3,500 calories, meaning you need to expend about 3,500 calories more than you consume throughout the week to lose one pound of body fat. Research consistently shows that calories are king when it comes to bodyweight changes ( 5 ). And how does one get lean? By being in a calorie deficit. Remember, if you want to lose belly fat, you need to get lean all over. Surprisingly, the answer is not hours of abdominal training every day instead, the solution is a consistent diet, intense weight training, and moderate amounts of cardio to facilitate fat loss. So, what's the best way to lose belly fat and gain muscle at the same time? Needless to say, if longevity, health, and being lean matter to you, then carrying a large amount of belly fat is not helping. The excess belly fat also starts to "crowd" around vital organs situated in the abdominal cavity, hindering their function. As visceral fat accumulates in the abdominal cavity, the belly and all its digestive innards start to protrude outward. In the case of belly fat, much of it is white fat tissue that surrounds internal organs that lie on the dorsal side of (read: behind) the abdominal wall this "internal" white fat is "visceral fat" - the main culprit of obesity's numerous harmful effects on the body ( 4 ). Having a portly waistline has many ramifications in terms of health and longevity. The aesthetic consequence of excess belly fat is a protruding gut. (The physiological roles of brown fat extend beyond the scope of this article, so we'll save that for a separate installment.) The majority of the fat tissue in humans is white fat, which is in charge of secreting fat-derived hormones called "adipokines." Humans also contain brown fat, a "healthy" fat that actually increases metabolic rate hence, brown fat tends to be higher in lean individuals. Moreover, not all body fat is the same-humans carry several types of fat tissue with distinct functions ( 3 ). The biological roles of fat tissue go well beyond insulating the body and serving as a long-term energy reservoir. You see, body fat (adipose tissue) is a complicated organ system. (Sorry folks, spot-reduction is a mainstream myth that just won't go away.) Where your body holds onto excess body fat is unfortunately out of your control, and you can't gain muscle if you're in a chronic calorie deficit ( 2 ). Alas, body recomposition is not as straightforward as one would hope. If we could target stubborn fat deposits like we could isolate specific muscle groups, it wouldn't be that complicated to lose fat and gain muscle. Let's face it: belly fat is the bane of any fitness enthusiast. Don't worry - this guide provides a calorie-cycling template to help with your body recomposition journey. Intuitively, the "workaround" is to have intermittent higher-calorie days to support muscle growth and consume fewer calories on other days to facilitate fat loss. You can't have excess calories and a deficiency of calories at any given moment. Well, doing so is incompatible with the laws of thermodynamics and what we know about human biochemistry: anabolic processes like muscle hypertrophy require a surplus of energy (calories), whereas catabolic processes like burning body fat necessitate an energy deficit. Many fitness enthusiasts take umbrage with the claim that it's not possible to lose fat and build muscle at the same time. While you theoretically can't build muscle and lose body fat simultaneously, body recomposition is possible with strategic calorie-cycling and diligent training. (Hence, fat-free mass (FFM) is synonymous with LBM.) For body recomposition, the goal is to increase FFM as this is a corollary of being leaner and more muscular ( 1 ). LBM is your total body weight minus fat mass. Another way to look at it is that body recomposition aims to increase the proportion of lean body mass (LBM) to fat mass. In other words, it's when someone wants to lose fat and gain muscle (thereby reducing body fat percentage). What is Body Recomposition?īody recomposition is the process of improving body composition. This guide will outline all the finer points of body recomposition and help you get started on the right foot with an 8-week diet and workout protocol to lose fat and gain muscle. However, this shouldn't discourage you! Body recomposition is achievable with the right diet, training, and supplement regimen. Countless hours of cardio and crunches aren't the answer, either (unless your goal is to be skinny/thin, which is not synonymous with being lean and muscular). If you want rock-hard abs, you need to be lean all over - generally under 10% body fat if you're a man and sub-12% body fat if you're a woman. Can You Lose Fat and Gain Muscle at the Same Time? Mark Meadows, R-N.C., one of the resolution’s sponsors, did not deny Democratic assertions that the document requests were related to efforts to undercut Mueller’s probe. Both investigations unfolded during the presidential election, causing the FBI - which prides itself on independence - to become entangled in presidential politics in ways that are continuing to shake out. The resolution that passed along party lines Thursday demanded that the department turn over by July 6 documents on FBI investigations into Clinton’s private email use and Trump campaign ties to Russia. His lawyer called Thursday night for the committee to release the entire transcript of the interview instead of “leaking selective excerpts designed to further a partisan agenda.” The inspector general criticized the officials for creating an appearance of impropriety but did not find evidence that bias had tainted prosecutors’ decisions in the Clinton investigation. On Wednesday, lawmakers spent 11 hours behind closed doors grilling Peter Strzok, the FBI agent who worked on both the Clinton and Russia investigations and traded anti-Trump text messages with an FBI lawyer. The hearing came amid Republican attacks on the Justice Department and allegations of FBI bias against Trump. “We are not in contempt of this Congress, and we are not going to be in contempt of this Congress,” he said. He said despite Republican allegations, he was “not trying to hide anything.” Rosenstein, at times raising his voice and pointing his finger, strongly defended himself and the department, saying he was doing his best to balance congressional oversight with the need to preserve the integrity of ongoing investigations. “Whatever you got,” Gowdy added, “finish it the hell up because this country is being torn apart.” Gowdy led a separate two-year investigation into the deadly 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, and Clinton’s role in those attacks as secretary of state. Trey Gowdy, a South Carolina Republican, said of Mueller’s investigation. They suggested the Justice Department had conspired against Trump by refusing to produce documents they believe would show improper FBI conduct. Republicans on the panel seized on the watchdog report to allege bias by the FBI and to discredit an investigation into potential ties between Russia and the Trump campaign that is now led by special counsel Robert Mueller. FBI Director Christopher Wray also appeared at Thursday’s hearing. The House Judiciary Committee hearing marked Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s first appearance before Congress since an internal DOJ report criticizing the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation revealed new disparaging text messages among FBI officials about Donald Trump during the 2016 election. Underscoring their frustration, Republicans briefly put the hearing on hold so they could approve a resolution on the House floor demanding that the Justice Department turn over thousands of documents by next week. WASHINGTON > Republicans accused top federal law enforcement officials Thursday of withholding documents from them and demanded details about surveillance tactics during the Russia investigation in a contentious congressional hearing that capped days of mounting partisan complaints. About two weeks before the primary, Fulton County election officials were scrambling to tackle a backlog of about 25,000 ballot applications. Some voters said they didn’t get their absentee ballot on time and headed to vote in person that contributed to the lines. The June 9 absentee-vote numbers were about a five-fold increase from the November 2016 election. More than 1.1 million ballots were cast absentee - compared with about 37,000 during the 2016 general primary. Local election officials weren’t prepared for the mail onslaught. The vast majority of Georgia voters had voted in person in the past - only about 5% voted by mail in the 20 general elections. Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger announced in March that he was sending absentee ballot request forms to all voters for the primary. Total turnout, absentee ballots, and early voting all set records, according to the Secretary of State’s office. Georgia’s June 9 election shattered records for primary turnout with more than 2.2 million ballots cast. RELATED: Voting Counts: How Kentucky’s June primary election turned out Here we will look back at what went wrong in the primary and what changes are underway for the Nov. Any election problems draw scrutiny in Georgia, a state that has faced criticism for years about how policies such as voter-list purges, polling closures or long lines affect voters, especially Black voters. Democrat Stacey Abrams’ narrow loss in the 2018 governor’s race shows that the state could be in play for Democrats this year including in two competitive U.S. Voter access in Georgia has drawn national attention because of the state’s changing demographics. The combination of new equipment, enthusiastic turnout, COVID-19 risks at polling sites, and insufficient poll workers that marred Georgia’s primary could recur in November. In Wisconsin, a masked voter in line to vote held up a sign saying "This is ridiculous," and became a national symbol of the pandemic-year voting chaos.īut Georgia’s struggles were particularly glaring, and they serve as an omen of what could go wrong on Nov. Nationally, election officials have faced the unprecedented challenges of handling increased voting by mail and creating COVID-safe in-person voting sites this year. When it was over, state and county officials pointed the finger at each other, lawmakers launched investigations and Democrats sued state and county election officials. Some counties had fewer polling locations than originally planned or had to relocate polling locations. Poll workers struggled to use new equipment. County officials were swamped with mail-in ballots. The headline in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution summed up Georgia’s June 9 primary in two words: "Complete meltdown."
